Ashtead Singers
Welcome to our website.
Ashtead Singers was formed many years ago as a small chamber choir in Ashtead, Surrey, meeting over the summer to perform local concerts and to sing services in nearby churches. We have developed over the years and now frequently sing Cathedral weekend services while the resident choirs are on holiday and have enjoyed singing in the wonderful surroundings of places such as Salisbury, Winchester, St Albans, Southwark, St Paul’s, Worcester, and Westminster Abbey. We have also had weekends away in Europe singing in Dublin, Luxembourg and in Brussels, on more than one occasion. In addition, each year, we perform a local concert either during the summer or at Christmas which allows us to sing from the broader choral repertoire as well as to engage a chamber orchestra for some of the more demanding concerts.
We number about 30 members, rehearse in Leatherhead, and are led by our talented and enthusiastic MD, Dr Andrew Storey
Examples of our singing can be found here.
If you are interested in joining, please have a look at further information here.
October Concert
Our next concert is on 19th October. We are performing in St. George's Church, Ashtead and the programme consists of an exciting range of music by Charles Villiers Stanford. Whilst his anthems and church settings are well-known his part-songs and madrigals are a mixture of styles and moods. The progamme finishes with Songs of the Fleet.
LFB Carol Service
Once again we have been invited to sing for the London Fire Brigade Carol Service in early December, in Westminster Cathedral.
Salisbury Cathedral
Ashtead Singers are singing the services for the weekend of the 15 and 16 Decmeber in Salisbury Cathedral.
Wells Cathedral
In April 2024, the choir went to Wells Cathedral and sang the weekend services. As always singing in these wonderful buildings is a real privilege and the choir enjoyed both the hard work and opportunities for drinks and meals.
Singing Workshop
In February 2023, the choir had an all day workshop run by our musical director in St James Garlickhythe in the City of London. The main work was the Kodaly Missa Brevis which proved to be both challenging and interesting.
Rehearsals
Preceding a concert we rehearse on a Tuesday evening in Leatherhead or Ashtead from 8pm to 10pm.
